The JV team traveled to Mason 2 days after Christmas to face a tough Mason squad. The Knights struggled early and could never catch up. Mason ended up winning the contest 40 – 34 and the defeat brought the lady knights record to 5-2. Game summary:
First time in 5! Yes, the first time in 5 seasons that the Lady Knights have beaten the Little Miami team on our home court. There is not much that needs to be said to fire us up for a league rival like this, but O’Leary did the honors in our final lockerroom chat just before game time of reminding the players that each will play a role…”just be ready for whatever is asked of you tonight.”
It was not the quickest start to a contest however we were ready for the intensity of the Little Miami team and we able to hold a 9-6 lead at the end of the 1st and never relinquish that. With perhaps on of our best team shooting percentages of the year we had doubled their score by half time and we playing very consistent with all of our combinations off the bench.
Standouts:
Once again the consistent scoring of Katelyn Haralamos lead us as she contributed 12 points while shooting 50% from the floor. Austyn Phelps also shot 50% and Sarah Ruwe went 4 for 7 a 57% shooting effort. When you are shooting like that your team is working together evidenced by the 17 assists for the game.
On the boards, Megan Fultz continues to be one of our dependable rebounders as she collected 7 boards to lead the team.
There is no doubt that this was a total TEAM effort won together.
And in the Crowd:
It was the Lady Knights pleasure to honor some of the very special fans that have supported the program in valuable ways. Prior to the game Shelby Kies, Erin Guiliano, and Allegra Logan presented Roger and Terry Coomer and Bob and Shirley Gabbard with our VIP awards for this season. Thank you so much for the support and constant dedication to the players by attending games and always giving a word of encouragement.

L 42-46Game Summary
Our second league game of the season was all we were expecting but did not go down as we were expecting also. Our game preparation was good, complete and all that was left to do was execute. We began the game in our fashion of play… not shooting too well but still up by 2 at the end of the first quarter. But then comes the second quarter… could not buy a basket and even though we saw fast break opportunities go by with a turnover we still worked hard and began to wear Turpin down and forced them to go to the bench often. The dismal 20% fg shooting did us in as we saw a 6 point deficit take s into the locker room at halftime. The third and fourth quarters were quite even in scoring which allowed us to compete and even take the lead by two on some tenacious full court trapping defense. In the end the Turpin squad prevailed by making free throws, missing only two the entire game.
Standout Players
For the 3rd game in a row the Knights were led in double digit scoring by senior Shelby Kies and sophomore Logan Warye. Additionally Shelby Kies has scored in double digits every game this season for the Lady Knights. Our rebounding leader again was Kies as she scooped up every rebound as we saw the rest of the defensive team box out Turpin and allow us to get our break going quickly. Logan Warye also was impressive from the free throw line with a perfect 6 for 6 shooting.
As for our team effort… defense remains the mainstay was we pressure the ball and out work our opponents holding them to just 36% field goal shooting.
Unusual happening
The stands were packed again with the Knights faithful. There was plenty noise from the KBA teams and their parents who were terrific support on a night when we needed all the help we could get from that 6th player, the fans.
The group of players from a few of the KBA squads filled the court as the team raced out to begin their warm ups.
A special thanks to the alum who are here in support when ever they are home. Our special pregame speech was offered by Abby Winebrenner who came strait from her game with the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds who are currently 10-2 and showing dominance in their DII schedule which saw them play in California in November where they won three games and recently fell just a bucket short of defeating the defending DII NCAA Champion Northern Kentucky.
Other Alum in the stands with Abby included: Jasmine Hill, Kylie Baker, Kelly Moffitt, Emily Leary, Kelli Warden, and a host of others.

Overview
Our first league game is in the books. The Lady Knights got off to a better start in this contest and led the entire game. This was truly a team effort as everyone contributed in a big way. With two players missing from the bench and one recovering from a recent illness we needed the focus and effort of everyone to be a bit bigger. Today it was our team togetherness that secured the victory early.
There is no question that defense was the name of the game today. Led on the defensive boards by Shelby Kies, yes the shortest player on our roster, our fastbreak was off and running once she secured the rebound. There is no better offense than the running game we are developing.
Our balanced attack saw nice ball movement both in transition and in the half court game leading to a score in the books for everyone who played for the Lady Knights.
Highlights
Logan Wayre starting her first game this season responded with a game leading 20 point effort!
For the third time this season Shelby Kies scores in double figures.
For the second game in a row Katelyn Haralamos puts up a double digit offensive effort.
When asked to play in the post, Erin, a usual wing or point player said “I got it” and went to work scoring quick baskets off of rebounds.
Not to be missed
Our special thanks for the ball girls today, Rachel Bernard and Emily Lima, they we terrific!
Another sweep for the Lady Knights program… Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity.
Reece’s expert work on the bench with whatever happens! Great work all support staff.
Game Summary:
Another game, another win for the varsity girls. With the pattern of a slow start followed by consistent defensive pressure the Lady Knights are finding a way to win ball games. Our second game was a bit more balanced in scoreing from quarter to quarter as well as having most everyone score for the team. The team found a stretch of very consistent running and passing which created open shots that were an easy two. This came during a stretch when the defense was holding Monroe to just 4 points, in fact just one basket from the field for them in both the 2nd and 3rd quarters. That created enough of a lead to give us the final victory.Standouts:
Both Shelby Kies and Katelyn Haralamos scored in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Rebounding was handled by Shelby (8), Lauren Collier and Logan Wayre both pulled in 5 boards each.
Points of Interest:
We won’t soon forget the look of a coach who recieved his first technical…maybe the ref really misunderstood! It is darn hard to coach sitting down for 25 minutes, give him room to roam next game. Every player saw minutes in the game and contributed to the win.
Up next the first FAVC league opponent, Amelia!
Game Summary
The Knights pressured the Hornets all nights into turnovers and bad shots. When it was all said and done, the Knights held Monroe to a rare singe digit performance of 9 points and went on to post a 61-9 victory. The defense was led bad Shannon Lance, April Rumelhart, Katie Male, Courtney Miller, and Sammy Jones who all had numerous rebounds and steals. Thanks to everybody who came out to Monroe on that cold wintry night. The JV Lady Knights are now 2-0 and have only given up 24 pts all year. We hope to continue our success against Amelia Saturday at home.
Standouts
- Abby Bush led the way with 12 pts
- Katie Stevens and Jenica Stoetzel added 11pts.

44-42 Win
Game Summary:
First game excitement took control in the first quarter as the Lady Knights scored just one bucket but had plenty of good looks all within 8 - 12 feet of the basket. What more could you ask for? By the half the Knights had played consistent defense and also found the basket to take a 20 - 15 lead. In fact Shelby Kies had 11 of the 20 while our inside players only managed a couple from the floor but got to the line to sink a few free throws. With the defense pressuring the ball and not allowing many easy shots the team opened up a 13 point lead in the third quarter only to see that become a tighter margin late in the fourth as the Warriors fought back scoring almost half of their game’s 42 points. As Lebanon hit the important shots to come within five, then two it was quite physical at the other end in which Shelby Kies drove the lane and scored what seemed to be a sure three point play, but was fouled before the shot and given two very important free throws in which she nailed them both. The Knights were able to hold on in the last 12 seconds for the first win of the season. So despite a dismal 28.5% shooting average for the game they walked out with a win!
Standouts:
Austyn Phelps contributed very solid minutes dogging the ballhandler on defense which greatly slowed Lebanon’s offensive attack. Shelby Kies was her usual steady offensive machine scoring from both the three point line and the paint thereby leading the offensive attack and leading all scorers for the game with 17 points.
Megan Fultz provided a very consistent effort grabbing key defensive rebounds and going 2 for 2 from the floor verifying her value as one who will be ready any time of the game to contribute.
Points of Interest:
The sea of red warm ups that packed the stands behind the home bench was a terrific support the whole game as both the Freshman and Junior Varsity team members cheered every move we made on the court.
The Lady Knights started the game in the usual fashion of the past scrimmages… slow to get rolling but applying defensive pressure that keyed finally an offensive run to break out into the lead. This would be a good thing not to do as a habit… the coaches sure would love to see a quick start on the score board in the next contest and consistent scoring from inside and out.
The final varsity game of the night capped a clean sweep of the Lebanon program and gave us the positive start to a promising season.
With just two full practices as a team and tons of trips up and down the court worked in there, we got up at the crack of dawn on Saturday to scrimmage Wyoming and Miamisburg. The girls responded with grit and some firery play that is an exciting indication of the potential the season holds to be very entertaining and aggressively played.
You will see Shelby Kies taking the ball to the hole no matter the size of defenders waiting. Maggie Donnellan will be popping a few threes to keep the defense on their toes. Logan Warye can find just the right open lane on the break to finish a quick transition. When it comes to using the low post as a dominant offensive threat we are expecting to see Sarah Ruwe and a couple others show the opponents we mean business.
We will be balanced with many contributing to every success we have, and all growing in their game knowledge so that the team takes on a growing identity.
We will settle in for a week of real learning and fundamental concentration, and begin to refine our individual games into a sharp attack together. Coach Karabinus will be pulling them all together again in our next scrimmage with Hamilton a week from now.
The goal of seeing each individual know just what they can control of their game to bring the team performance to it’s peak will be the defining focus of our next few preseason games.
