The fine ladies that led our team this year will be missed.  We wish you nothing but continued success at the next level and with your future endeavors.

MICHELLE BRUNS:  Daughter of Pam and Tom Bruns, Michelle has been involved in the Reading Buddy Program, she is a French tutor for 3rd graders, and she has worked with the Prom committee and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has played soccer for the Knights and is a 2-year varsity player and one of our team captains this season. Michelle plans to attend The Ohio State University or the University of Cincinnati and study nursing.

ABBY BUSH: Daughter of Ann & Mike, Abby has been involved with the Prom Committee, the Reading Buddies program and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  She has been a valuable contributor to the soccer program and is a 3 year varsity member of the Basketball team, she was honored as 2^nd Team all FAVC last season, and is one of the team captains this season.  She plans to attend the University of Dayton and play soccer while studying Exercise Science.

LAURA HARSNETT:  Daughter of parents Melissa & Jim, Laura  has been involved with the Reading Buddy Program; she is a Spanish tutor for 4^th graders, volunteers in the community and has participated in the track program.  She is a first year varsity player.  Laura plans to study nursing at the University of Cincinnati next fall.

KATIE STEVENS:  Daughter of Susan & Mike, Katie has been a part of the Prom committee, the Reading Buddies program and French tutor. Her athletic participation involves both the volleyball and basketball programs.  Katie has played basketball forever, and while sustaining severe knee injuries she has been kept off the court this season this but very much a valuable contributor to this team.  She too is going to the University of Cincinnati for a nursing degree.

HALEY WALTER:  Daughter of Rona & Craig, Haley has spent her four years of high school being involved with Young Life and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  She has played soccer, run track and been in our basketball program.  She is a member of the National Honor Society.  She plans to attend Miami University where she will play soccer for the Redhawks and probably major in education.

STEPHANIE WEHMER: Daughter of  Brenda & Chip, Stephanie has been both a Spanish and French tutor.  She has been a part of both the soccer and basketball program throughout her 4 years of high school.  She is a 2 year varsity player, was an Honorable Mention all FAVC player last season and a team captain this year. She is planning to attend either The Ohio State University or the University of Tennessee to study Veterinary Science.

While there are many memories our seniors will cherish, they all would leave their teammates with these thoughts: cherish the time you have with your team, choosing a positive attitude, and make the most of this opportunity to play the sport you love.

The defending FAVC Champions Kings Lady Knights closed out the 2011-12 season by visting Milford and Glen Este.

At Milford, the 12-1 (FAVC) Freshman girls opened up play facing the only FAVC team to beat the KLK and both teams were looking to claim sole possession of first place. The battle was fierce and the Lady Knights had the edge at half-time as the defense rattled the Eagles, but an absent 3rd quarter allowed the home team to take a 6 point lead into the 4th and the 9th graders fall 4 points short at the end.  An impressive season for the best record of the basketball trio of teams. KLK Freshman end their season 12-5, overall 12-2 in FAVC play.

The JV lost at home to Milford in January in a close battle, so the team came out fighting but never really seemed to gain momentum.  A rally in the 4th quarter kept the hopes up but again fell short to the tough home team and JV lose this one 25-32.

When Varsity played the red hot Eagles at home in January, it was a buzzer beater by Haley Delaney that stunned the visitors with only their second loss of the season.  The game was full of energy from the opening tip with several lead changes and the KLK leading at the half.  But one bad quarter of production from the blue and white was all the home team needed to gain momentum and close the game with a 7 point victory, handing the Varsity their 7th loss of the season.  Final 34-41 GAME STATS

The season ends on the road at Glen Este with two out of the three squads visiting the land of Purple.  The JV wanted to close out their season on a winning note and they delivered! The JV came out with speed and determination and never let the home team get any advantage. JV finishes the year with their second win over GE 31-23. Final record 10-9, 10-6 FAVC.

When GE came to the K-house on January 11th, the difference in the game was the missed free throws in the last moments of the game that allowed the KLK to maintain a 1 point lead and get the W.  This time, the Trojans were not going to allow that to happen as they dominated 3 quarters of play and with a 12 point lead going into the fourth, the game was favoring the home team. Enter the varsity scoring machine as they outscored the home team 22-10 to close the gap and take the game into the second OT of the season. But as in the previous game in January, the free throw shooting proved to the difference again, but favoring the home team this time.  Final 67-69.  GAME STATS

Despite the loss HALEY DELANY was red HOT as her production in Glen Este puts her in the spotlight with 28 POINTS! This Junior went 9 for 15 inside the arc and 2-4 outside of it, and hit 8 out of 13 free throws.  WAY TO GO HALEY!! 

Last week, the second to last week of the season, the KLKB program went to Walnut Hills and then hosted Anderson.

At WH, the Varsity claims one of the best statistical games of the season as they went 50% from the field, and 66% from 3pt range.  Abby Bush was on fire with 13 points and went 6 for 6 at the line.  Followed by Claire Sichterman with 9, the Bruns sisters: Michelle and Laura  matched with 7, Haley Delaney with 4, Mac Seiter, Stephanie Wehmer with 3 and Madi Bauer with 2.  Final 48-39.  GAME STATS

Saturday Feb 4 marked the last home game for the seniors of the KLKB team.  Although the official Senior recognition occurred the week previously, the emotions for the seniors were, no doubt, very obvious.  The visiting Anderson Redskins came out with a charge and never relented, until the 4th quarter when the varsity scored more points in the final stanza than the previous 3 to close the differential to 13.  Props to Haley Delaney as she scored 13 points and went 3-4 at the charity stripe. The Freshman build on a 6 game win streak and open the day of games with a huge win over the Anderson Frosh.  The game was about as complete of a game as the 9th graders have executed and a huge shout out to BIANCA OTENG as she was beaming with pride after scoring her first points of the season.  Congrats to the entire Freshman team as they improve to 12-4 on the season: Bianca Oteng, Libby Coleman, Grace Wolf, Jordan Philpot, Colleen Riesing,  Brooke Renner, Patrice DiPasquale, Jenna Maschino, Kiley Maxwell, and Brianne Gray.  With one game remaining at Milford on Weds, 2/8, the Eagles were the last team to beat the Frosh back on January 7th, so the team is looking for some payback to close the season on a winning note.

On Saturday January 28th, the KLKB team celebrated our SENIORS! HALEY WALTER, LAURA HARSNETT, MICHELLE BRUNS, ABBY BUSH, STEPHANIE WEHMER, and KATIE STEVENS.

The 3 teams faced the Turpin Spartans for the second time this season.  The FRESHMAN started out with a great victory, which featured LIBBY COLEMAN with her first 4 points of the season! Way to go team! Record improves to 11-4.

JV had a convincing win against the Spartans in December, but fell short at the buzzer, record falls to 8-7.

In their first OT game of the season in December, the Varsity lost to Turpin and looked to take revenge, but the zone and low shooting percentages were the challenges that kept the varsity from the win.  FINAL: 51-40.  Record falls to 8-8 overall, 7-5 in FAVC.

GAME STATS

On Saturday January 21, 2012, the first ice storm blanketed the area, but it was only the outside world that was cold.  Inside the K-house, the JV, coming off two losses in a row, was smokin’ hot as the entire team contributed to a dominant performance against the visiting Hurricanes of Wilmington.  The JV beat Wilmington earlier in December on their home court by 12 points.  This time around the margin of victory was 19 as the home team takes the orange and black 28-47.  Nice job KLK JV: Riley Brashear, Cara Thomas, Alyssa Johnson, Audrey Farber, Arden Jestice, Christine Harris, Mackenzie Kruse, Sarah Palmer. Record improves to 8-6.

The Varsity, coming off a 26 point loss from the Mason Comets, again, struggled against a strong shooting opponent in the Hurricanes.  The sophmore duo of Savannah Hooper and Brianna Camp combined for 32 points, which for a second time in as many games, outscores the entire KLK team.   The achilles heal of the game was the shooting percentages where the team went 31% from the field.  Of great note was senior Stephanie Wehmer also looked good going 4 for 4 at the foul line and hitting 3 for 5 from the field and ringing in 10 points and sophmore Claire Sichterman who flourished in the 4th quarter to shoot 2 for 2 outside the arc and with another FG to end with 8 points.  FINAL 57-29, record moves to 7-7 overall, 6-4 in the FAVC.  GAME STATS

In the first game of the day, the Freshman hosted Ross in the second meeting of the season.  In December the Freshman had an easy time with the Rams beating them by 12, but this time around the Rams had an answer for the hot young freshman team, fortunately, in the end, the 9th graders prevail to take a 31-36 victory and improve to 10-4 on the season.

NEXT UP: Weds January 25th finds the KLK teams split in two with the Freshman hosting Springboro at KHS with a 4:30 tip off, and then the JV/Varsity traveling to Little Miami, where the Panthers will seek revenge from earlier losses to both JV and Varsity from their December meeting at the K-House.  Tip 6:00/7:30 LMHS.

On Weds. Jan 18th, the power forwards from Mason, Brianna Glover and Kayla McDowell, at 6’1″ and 6’2″ respectively, managed to score more points than the entire KLK team  scored for the game.  Glover and McDowell combined for 29 points and the height, speed of the visiting team was simply no match for the Knights.  Despite a fairly tight 1st quarter, with 3 lead changes, once the Comets got into their groove, the KLK had no answer to any shots, going only 11-40 from the floor.  Varsity takes this on the chin and moves to 7-6 on the season. FINAL: 54-26.

The JV had a strong start and gave the Comets a good run.  Scoring from Sarah Palmer, Kiley Maxwell, Brianne Gray, Arden Jestice, and Riley Brashear kept the hopes alive, but the fast breaks and layups caught up to the team at the end.  The JV streak of 2 losses in a row is the first of the season, moving to 7-6 with a 38-26 final.

The stars of the night were the freshman as they take out the Comets.  This defensive battle was so tight  with more passing and movement of the ball in the back court, that there was very little shooting to be had and not  single foul shot taken in the first half by either team.  The half time score was 6-6.  Sometimes a good halftime break is what a team needs to get ‘er goin’ and that’s what the Frosh did as they scored 9 points to only Mason’s 3 points in the third stanza and hang on to use up the clock as Mason tried to rally, but the KLK Freshman prevail and finish the game 17-20.  Kiley Maxwell gets high fives with 9 points followed by Brooke Renner with 5 and Jenna Machino and Brianne Gray with 2 each.  Freshman improve to 9-4 on the season.

On Saturday Jan 14, the future Kings Lady Knights players were recognized during the halftime of the Varsity game against Loveland.  Players in grades 2-8 adorned the gym to watch the very girls who started their basketball careers with the KBA program.  The KLK came out strong as this game became quickly reminiscent of the first meeting at Loveland in November, when the red and blue won 50-34.

Standout play from seniors Abby Bush (14 pts, 4-5 FTM/A) and  Steph Wehmer (10 pts, 2-4 FTM/A) and junior Haley Delaney (10 pts 1-1/FTM/A) led the home team to a 34-49 victory and the KLK are on a 3 game win streak, improve their record to 7-5, 6-3 in the FAVC.

In the earlier games of the evening, the JV had their first OT game of the season. The KLK JV struggled to capitalize on a couple of opportunities and fall to the black and orange by 6.  Record drops to 7-5.

The freshman opened the evening of games with dominant play and repeat the victory of November by beating the Tigers 28-46, record improves to 8-4.

Weds. Jan 11, the Glen Este Trojans at KHS: How important is it to make your free throws? Laura Bruns went to the line with 1 minute left in the game and made 2 free throws to give the KLK’s a 1 point lead.  With a quick GE score and now trailing by 1, the KLK drove down the court and then Haley Delaney was fouled and sent to the line.  BOOM and BOOM, Kings back to a 1 point lead.  With .2 seconds left on the clock, GE’s Katie Gaskill was fouled and sent to the line with the Trojans down by one.  As a result of 2 missed free throws, the Varsity completed the sweep of the trio of games on this night, winning 48-49.

How important is it to make your free throws? Abby Bush went 4-4, Michelle Bruns 2-2, Laura Bruns 3-4, Haley Delaney 2-3, Steph Wehmer 1-2.  As a team the KLK went 12 for 15, where GE went just 15-32. Games are won and lost at the line, and we’ll take them any way we can get them.  Record improves to 6-5 on the season and 5-3 in the FAVC.

In the middle game of the night, the JV came out strong against a slower GE team and entered the lockerroom with a 6 point lead.  But GE’s adjustments slowed the KLK’s production in the third to take a brief lead.  However, the fourth quarter reignited the spark that has helped the JV do so well all season and Riley Brashear, Alyssa Johnson, Arden Justice and Sarah Palmer, poured on the heat to close this story 25-36.  Record improves to 7-4.

The Freshman saw a rematch with a young Western Brown team.  In the first meeting in December, the 9th graders had no troubles with the Bronco’s and sailed to an 18 point victory.  And the game from Weds would be nearly identical.  Brooke Renner’s speed and finesse landed her 12 points to lead the team, followed by Patrice DiPasquale 8, Brianne Gray 6, Jenna Maschino, Colleen Reising and Grace Wolf all match 4 points each.  Final 22-40, records improves to 7-4.

Wittenberg Tigers and Wilmington Quakers face off in the championship game of the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic at Wittenberg University on Fri.  Dec. 30, at 4:30.  A Holiday tourny in Springfield, OH may not seem like big news, but this match up features two Kings Lady Knights alums Shelby Kies (’09) who is a JR at WC and Katelyn Haralamos (’11), a Freshman at Witt.  

In the first game, Kies, one of the 5 starters,  and her Quaker-mates faced Brescia and maintained a lead most of the game, but with Brescia tying the game with only 5 minutes remaining, the Quakers poured it on to win by 8.  Final 51-59.  WILMNGTON GAME STORY

In the second game of the tourny, Harlamos, one of 3 freshman starters, had a fairly easy time with their opponent, Rose-Hulman, and scored all of her 14 points in the second half.  Katelyn was featured in the post game story out of Wittenberg: WITTENBERG GAME STORY
