 Coach’s Comment.

“We came out playing well early in the first, and got out to an early lead. We got a lot of easy buckets in transition off steals, and Wilmington really had a hard time with our press. We got a little stale in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, but really made a push in the 4th, when we had to. That win puts us at 8 and 1 in the conference, with a big game tomorrow against Walnut Hills for the conference title.”

The final score of this Kings great win was 41 to 22. After the game I talked with Coach McClung and he said “We came out hot with a lot of steals and easy buckets in transition. I like the way our defense played, but on offense we were struggling and need to improve. A great defensive effort carried us through this game.” McClung also said that Kings needs to improve on foul shots after going 7 of 17 from the free throw line. Kings’ record is now 4 and 2 and will change on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 as Kings plays Wilmington. Stats: Drew Schueler, David Hare and Nick Jenkins scored 2 points each. Knights Beat Turpin

Kings vs. Turpin Freshman 12/18/09

By Jackson Schueler

The tipoff set the initial momentum when Austin Copeland stole the ball from Turpin and was fouled. He made both of his shots. Soon after, Turpin was charged with a technical on #22.  Max Lerer made one of the two shots with one minute and fifty three seconds left in the first.  At the end of the first, the score was 20 to 8 with Kings in the lead.  Kings had two fouls and Turpin had six.  In the second quarter, Kings took advantage by getting back cuts, good shots, and great ball movement.  At the end of the second quarter, the score was 34 to 19.

In the third quarter, Kings got the ball, but came out flat and was out scored 16 to 6. “We had too many turnovers, and we weren’t taking care of the ball.”  In the middle of the third, Coach McClung called a strategic timeout to even out the momentum and try to get the team regrouped.  At the end of the third, the score was 40 to 35 and both teams had two fouls. The fourth started with a Ryan Anthony rebound and a great drive by Austin for two points and the foul.  Later in the fourth, Brent had a great spin off one of the defenders and drained an easy twelve footer. And with a little more than two minutes left, Max Lerer had a fantastic block as Turpin attempted a far shot. The score was 48 to 37 with one minute and fifty five seconds remaining.  Kings did not commit a single foul in the fourth quarter while Turpin added four.

The guards handled and distributed the ball well, and got good back door layups and good looks.  Kings came out strong and made a good impression in the first half, but in the second half they lost their intensity and slowed down.

I talked to Coach McClung after the game and he told me “We came out with great intensity and got 34 points in the first half, which is more than our total against Mason. We executed very well offensively to get the 34 points. Many of the offensive points came off of good defensive steals and blocks. In the third quarter we came out flat and let Turpin catch up. In the fourth quarter, we brought a lot of intensity and outscored them 10 to 6 to pull out a great FAVC win!”

Max Lerer had a great game totaling 15 points, 13 in the first half and 2 in the second, Austin Copeland had 9 points, Nathan Pucke had 6, Ryan Anthony had 6 also, Brent Mathias had 5 points, Nick Handorf had 5 points also, and Nick Wolf had 4 points.

Kings vs. Mason Tuesday, December 15 2009

By Jackson Schueler

Mason traveled to Kings and brought a lot of intensity to the KHS Gym.  The Kings freshman team matched their intensity and brought a great effort on both sides of the floor to make for an outstanding game that saw many lead changes.

The opening quarter was close and intense and set the tone for the rest of the game.  Mason lead 10 to 6 after the first quarter. The second quarter began with Nick Jenkins, Nick Wolfe, Nathan Pucke, Max Lerer, and David Hare. Kings got momentum after a Brent Mathias steal, which Austin Copeland took and drained a shot from the elbow. The score was fourteen to thirteen Kings at the end of the half.

The second half was very extreme and intense with the score bouncing back and forth, like a tug of war. Momentum was boosted for Kings when Brent Mathias tipped the ball out of Mason # 11’s hands and into the hands of Austin Copeland. Austin drew the defenses attention before passing to Ryan Anthony who was fouled on the play. He missed his first free throw but made his second which tied Kings up with Mason. Later in the third, a foul and a technical on Coach McClung were called on Kings handing the momentum to Mason. Mason took advantage and made 3 of 5 from the line.  At the end of the third the score was twenty three to twenty four with Mason leading. In the beginning of the fourth, Kings brought the game to tie at twenty five with two minutes left in the game. With one minute and five seconds Mason made four-footer. Max Lerer was later fouled and made one of the two shots.  Kings was now in a position to score quickly with time winding down.  Kings was forced to foul to stop the clock and Mason took advantage of it making their free throws down the stretch.  Another Mason player was fouled which put Mason up by five with about thirty seconds left.  Mason won the game with a final score of thirty one to twenty six.

Nathan Pucke led the Knights with eight points, Max Lerer had four points, Austin Copeland had six points, Brent Mathias had six, and Ryan Anthony chipped in two.

After the game I met with Coach McClung and he told me “Kings had a great effort both on offense and defense. Mason just made a couple more shots. We had some good looks but could not put the ball in the bucket, missing a couple of bunnies around the rim.  Down the stretch, they were very good from the free throw line making 10 of 14 shots.  We were 4 for 9 from the line.  Mason had a great defensive stand in the fourth quarter and held us to only three points.”
