MEN'S VARSITY BASKETBALL NEWS
Feb. 22, 2007
The Knights' season ended with a thud Tuesday night, losing to the Anderson Redskins 44 to 42.
It was a match up of two teams with similar success this year - both were 14 and 5 with wins and losses against common opponents. But there the similarities did end; the Redskins are a two-man team, with their top two scorers netting 64% of the Redskins points, whereas the Knights, who boasted the largest point differential in the FAVC, were a nightmare for scouting coaches, with no single player averaging in double digits.
The Knights made Julian Wilkison their priority from the start, playing a 1-3 with a "chaser", and doubling Wilkison every time he touched the ball. It worked, as the city's leading scorer managed just 4 points in the first half. But the Redskins found just enough holes in the Knights defense to lead at the half, 22 to 20, as the Knights shot just 6 of 24 from the floor.
The second half found the Knights continueing to take the ball out of Wilkison's hands, but their shooting woes also continued. The Knights fought to keep it close, and when Justin Testerman knotted the score at 40 with 1:07 left in the game, it looked like the Knights might pull it out. But it was not to be; two free throws and a turnover led to a 4 point lead, which Testerman cut to 2 with a put back as time ran out.
Testerman and Ben Muennich led the Knights with 8 points apiece; Chris Maxwell and Aaron Gayhart contributed 6 and Danny Hagee 5.
So the 2006-7 season ends on a low note. But the season had plenty of high notes, which will be chronicled in future editions of the Roundball News!

KNIGHTS CELEBRATE SENIOR NIGHT WITH FAVC CARDINAL
TITLE
Feb. 16, 2007
The Knights matchup with Walnut Hills Friday was all-or-nothing; a win would secure a share of the FAVC Cardinal title and send the Knights into the post season with momentum. A loss would put the Knights in second place, and - as it turns out - hand the FAVC title to rival Turpin, who beat the Wilmington Hurricane in overtime. The Knights were up to the challenge, beating the Eagles 57 to 42 and securing the title for the second time in 3 years.
The first half was not pretty, both teams struggling with ball control and foul trouble. The Knights fought from behind in the second quarter, making a late run to close the half at 19-all.
In the second half the Knights seniors took over. Chris Maxwell started the half with a steal, and the Knights trapping defense began taking its toll, eventually forcing the Eagles into 24 turnovers.
The fourth quarter was all Knights. And as the clock ran down, Coach Mike Stevens sent his seniors back into the game one time, bringing them out to a standing ovation with a minute left and the Knights in command.
Conor Thomas led all scorers with 14 points - including 12 in the second half as the Knights took command - and added 7 rebounds. Chris Maxwell had 10 points - featuring a couple of his patented acrobatic layups - and 4 steals.
And the Knights celebrated. The Knights seniors - Thomas, Maxwell, Justin Testerman and team manager Alex Kovacs - hoisted the FAVC Cardinal trophy, the team cut down the nets, and the Knights, at 14 and 5, will head into the post season on a 3-game winning streak.
The first test is Anderson, at Lakota West High School this Tuesday. The Redskins also finished their season 14 and 5; this is an excellent matchup of two strong FAVC teams. Let's make the trip and get the Knights started on their post-season run! See the front page for directions. Box Scores | SlideShow
GO FAVC-CARDINAL CHAMP KNIGHTS!!!
Feb. 9 2007
It was a satisfying win. The Knights had just managed a tough win on the strength of Matt Stevens' five three-pointers. They had fought off the inspired Little Miami Panthers and now were heading into the final week of the season hoping for a miracle that could put them back into the title hunt.
Then the word began to spread: the Amelia Barons had knocked off Turpin's Spartans... ten three-pointers... a last second tip-in... And suddenly the Knights were
breathing new life, tied with Turpin and Wilmington atop the FAVC Cardinal with one week to play in the regular season.
The night started off less promising. The Knights had posted themselves to an 8-0 lead, but the Panthers - buoyed by the return of injured star Matt Beerse - were playing well, deserving better, and clawed their way back to a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second period the Knights took the lead, but the Panthers would not go away. Beerse had been shut down in the first half, but he began to find the range in the second, and the Panthers fought their way back into a tie in the third quarter.
But through all the tough wins - and tougher losses - this Knights team has found grit. They know that they'll hit tough stretches, that calls and shots will go the other way, that these are things they'll fight through. The Knights battled the Panthers down the stretch, and when Stevens - who led all scorers with 19 points - knocked down two free throws in the final minute, the Knights had finally put the game out of reach.
The revelation of Turpin's loss served to put the win in perspective. The Knights had overwhelmed Little Miami in January and could be forgiven some overconfidence. But the Panthers - and the Barons - reminded everyone that on any given night...
Now the Knights are in position to defend - instead of just hoping for - a share of the FAVC Cardinal title. But they have a big week ahead, traveling to Withrow on Tuesday before their big Senior Night, FAVC-title securing showdown with Walnut Hills this Friday.
With snows coming in stay tuned for changes; let's bundle up and be ready to back the Knights as they close in on the title!! See you at Withrow, then at The Mill for Senior Night on Friday! BOX SCORES | SlideShow

Thursday night the Knights took on the Harrison Wildcats in a game that had the feel of a scrimmage. With the snow, the cold, a 2-day delay and a school night, few of the faithful were on hand to see the Knights rekindle some of their early season spark.
The game started slowly, the Knights trying to shake off the cobwebs after two days off. The first quarter left the Wildcats up 12 to 11, and the friends-and-family crowd a little concerned.
No worries, mate.
In the second period the Knights began to apply full court defensive pressure - forcing the Wildcats into 9 turnovers in the 2nd quarter alone - and that sparked the offense. Winning the quarter by an 18 to 4 margin, the Knights took a 29 to 16 lead - and lot of confidence - into the locker room at half time.
The Knights were returning to their roots - tough defense, balanced scoring. The third quarter was a repeat of the second, highlighted by a last-second 1/2 court beauty by Chris Maxwell. And in the fourth quarter the Knights cleared the bench and losed out the game in strong fashion.
The Knights put 12 players in the scoring column, led by Justin Testerman's 11 and Conor Thomas' 10. Alex Grant led rebounders with 6, and Calvin Scruby added 6 assists.
Tonight - Friday night - the Knights take on Little Miami on the road. Let's back the Knights as they head toward the post season with a head of steam!! See you there!! Box Scores

HURRICANE TOPPLE KNIGHTS, 50 - 43
Feb. 2, 2007
The Knights replayed their early-season battle with Wilmington Friday night... but the roles were reversed. In their first matchup the Knights gained some separation in the third quarter and managed an 8 point victory; this time it was the Hurricane that broke a close game open in the 3d period and closed out to win, 50 to 43. The loss drops the Knights into a second place tie with the Hurricane and puts Turpin's Spartans in the driver's seat for the league title.
Justin Testerman led the Knights with 11 points. Danny Hagee played a strong game, contributing 8 points and 9 rebounds. The Knights are 6 and 2 in the FAVC-C and 11 and 5 overall. This week the Knights entertain Harrison at The Mill on Tuesday and travel to Little Miami on Friday. See you at The Mill! Box Scores | SlideShow

COLD KNIGHTS COME UP SHORT, 53-50
Jan. 26, 2007
In one of the best basketball atmospheres ever seen at The Mill, the Knights came up short by an unlucky roll of the round ball. Mike Rice’s last second shot, which even the Turpin guard thought was off target, somehow found its way through the nets, sending the FAVC Cardinal race into a 6-1 deadlock and forcing Knights and Spartans to battle through the remaining three games to maintain their share.
The story of this game was how the Knights, bolsterd by a fan base that included 2 full student sections, battled to stay close despite sinking only 8 of 18 free throws and going 0 for 8 from behind the arc.
The game started as classic Kings-Turpin, with the Knights taking a one point lead into the second quarter. The Knights burst out of the blocks in the second quarter, jumping out to a 19 to 12 lead on 2 buckets by Justin Testerman and one by Ben Muennich, but the Spartans came right back and took the lead 20 to 19. Neither team would lead by more than 5 the rest of the way. But for Kings the half ended on an ominous note, as the Spartans’ Matt Cameron flashed the baseline for a reverse layup to up the Spartans lead to 26 to 23.
The third quarter would be a preview to the fourth – the Spartans maintained their slim 3-point margin till late in the quarter, till the Knights managed to tie it at 37 all on a tough drive by Matt Stevens. Turpin missed a three on what looked like the last play of the quarter, but the ball went out of bounds off the Knights and the Spartans retained possession with 0.9 seconds showing on the clock. That’s when reserve forward Pete Carey, 1 of 9 from beyond the arc going into the game, caught an inbounds pass 25 feet from the basket and banked in a three as the horn sounded ending the quarter, and the Spartans held a 3 point advantage going into the fourth period.
This was a great night for high school basketball fans. The gym was jammed to the rafters as two bitter rivals battled for first place in the conference. Media coverage was thick, the successful Kings White Out seasoned the atmosphere at The Mill, and the fourth quarter was bedlam from the first second to the last as the Knights student sections got the crowd rocking and gave the Knights the kind of support that raised hairs on the back of your neck.
Early in the 4 th quarter Justin Testerman sank two free throws to tie the game at 41-all, but Turpin came right back with a bucket of their own and the Knights would battle from behind the rest of the way. With less than 20 seconds left and the Knights down 50 to 49, Chris Maxwell was forced to foul Spartans guard Craig Cantor, a 73% free throw shooter. But Cantor’s shot rolled off the rim, Muennich grabbed the rebound and the Knights had their chance. With 11 seconds left Justin Testerman attacked the rim, was fouled, and sank the second free throw, knotting the game at 50.
One tough defensive sequence and the game would go to overtime – which would favor the fresher Knights, whose rotation regularly features 9 to 10 players.
On Turpin’s final possession The Knights played good straight-up man defense, and when the Spartans’ Mike Rice caught the ball, drove into the chest of Mark Byrd at the top of the key and threw up an off-balance shot, it looked like the Knights would get their overtime. But the ball managed to stay on the rim long enough to roll in, and a great night of basketball ended in bitter defeat for the Knights.
The Knights were balanced in their scoring – Justin Testerman led with 14 points along with 3 steals and Aaron Gayhart played a strong game with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Jeff Testerman added 8 points and Chris Maxwell and Ben Muennich 6 each.
Now the Knights will gather themselves for the stretch run starting with a tough road game at Wilmington next Friday. The Hurricane – who had been favored to win the conference – will hope to knock the Knights back into a second place tie and give themselves a chance in the conference race. This is an important contest for the Knights – let’s make the road trip and cheer the Knights on as they battle for the conference title! Box Scores | Slide Show

The Knights traveled to Fairfield Tuesday night for the third of four regular-season battles with GMC opponents. Each of these has been different - a thorough thrashing of Middletown , a 2 OT loss to Milford ... and now a cold trip to Fairfield . The Indians, just 3 - 9 but coming off a big win over tough Centerville , were playing with confidence on their home floor, and the Indians downed the Knights 43 to 36.
The Knights battled from behind all night long. They managed to tie the score at the half, 20 - 20, but the third quarter, which proved to be their undoing, ending in a 7 point deficit which the Knights could not dent in the 4 th quarter.
Justin Testerman led the Knights with 19 points. But the Knights' keys to winning - balanced scoring and strong free throw shooting - were both absent this night. The Knights managed just 3 of 9 free throws, and the Knights, who regularly post 8 or 9 players in the scoring column, had only 6 players contribute points.
The Knights are now 6-0 in conference and 11-3 overall. Next up for the Knights: the biggest game of the season so far!! The 11 - 2 Turpin Spartans come to The Mill this Friday. The Knights own a slim one game lead over the Spartans heading into this huge matchup of FAVC Cardinal titans. Let's Pack The Mill for one of the biggest games in years! Box Scores
GO KNIGHTS!JUSTIN TESTERMAN LEADS KNIGHTS PAST AMELIA
Jan. 19, 2007
The Knights went into Friday night’s contest with the Amelia Barons determined to put Tuesday’s tough 2-overtime loss to Milford behind them. They managed to do that, winning 59 to 41, and head into the meat of the season’s second half with a one game lead in the Division.
The night didn’t start that way... the Knights looked sluggish in the first period, falling behind 8 to 2. It looked promising, though – the Knights usually start slowly and Amelia’s tough point guard Courtney Rogers was having little success with the Knights defense – and the Knights managed to close to 10 to 8 going into the second period.
The Knights’ balance began to have its effect in the second quarter, six Knights scoring in the period en route to a 23 – 16 half time lead.
Then in the third quarter Justin Testerman shook the wheels off the Barons’ bus.
Attacking the basket repeatedly, scoring and drawing fouls, Justin and the Knights went on a 20-6 run. Testerman had 12 points in the period and Conor Thomas 8 - the two seniors combining to outscore the Barons 20 to 11 - and the Knights extended the lead to 20 going into the fourth period. From there the Knights coasted to another FAVC Cardinal win, running their conference record to 6 - 0.
Ten Knights contributed points, led by Testerman’s 19 and Thomas’ 9. Perhaps just as significantly, 10 Knights also contributed rebounds, led by Mark Byrd’s 9 and Chris Maxwell’s 8. Byrd, a guard, has now averaged almost 7 rebounds per game over the last 6 games. Box Scores | Slide Show

KNIGHTS FALL TO MILFORD IN 2 OT
Jan. 16, 2007
Mama said there’d be nights like this…
The Knights went into Tuesday night’s game with Milford riding a 10-game winning streak built on balanced scoring and clutch free throw shooting. The balanced scoring was there – 8 Knights scored, including 3 in double figures – but the free throw shooting was AWOL, and the Knights finally fell 57 to 56 in two overtimes.
The Knight had maintained a slim margin throughout a game which had the same look and feel as the last two – hard fought and hotly contested. But the Knights went to the free throw line 23 and 25 times in those two games, and hit 81%. Tuesday night the Knights took 15 free throws and hit only 8.
The pace of the game became more frenetic and defense-oriented as time wound down in regulation. Both teams missed opportunities to put the game away – even more so in the first overtime when neither team managed to score.
Milford took command early in the second overtime but the Knights fought back and took the lead on a layup by Aaron Gayhart with 8 seconds to play. But the Eagles are led by veteran gunner Brandon Baker, who took the ball on the wing and with 3 seconds left hit a well-defended turnaround jumper that finally finished the Knights.
The Knights scoring was led by Chris Maxwell’s 14 points, followed by Gayhart with 13. Maxwell and Mark Byrd also contributed 8 rebounds – Byrd’s third 8-rebound game in the last five.
The Knights will try to get back on track Friday, entertaining the Amelia Barons in an important conference matchup. The Knights are now 10-2, 5-0 in the conference and they need our support! Let’s get the Red out Friday night – see you at The Mill!! Box Scores

KNIGHTS STEP IT UP AGAIN
Jan. 15, 2007
Friday night the Knights went back in time, traveling to Walnut Hills to play in the self-professed “Nut House”. The Eagles’ gym is one of the toughest places to play in the FAVC, and it showed Friday night as the Knights had to battle the 2 and 8 Eagles down to the wire to win, 47 to 44, in a game that saw neither team lead by more than 5 points.
With field goals hard to come by – the Knights made only 2 three pointers – it was important to make the most of free throw opportunities, and as usual the they responded. For the second time in a week the Knights – the top free-throw shooting team in the FAVC, won the game at the line, this time by hitting 75% and outscoring the Eagles at the line 18 to 7.
The brothers Testerman were the “driving” force for the win; Justin led the Knights with 12 points, and brother Jeff drove the lane and converted a conventional 3-point play in the final minute to put the Knights in position for the win. Danny Hagee and Mark Byrd also hit key free throws down the stretch.
This week the Knights have another tough week in front of them, traveling to Milford for an inter-conference battle on Tuesday, and hosting the Amelia Barons on Friday in an FAVC Cardinal matchup. Box Scores

KNIGHTS MOVE TO 9 - 1 WITH WIN OVER THE OWLS
Jan. 12, 2007
The Knights were ready for a rough one Tuesday night. It was finals week, they were still missing Junior Ben Muennich, and facing Mt. Healthy who was coming off a big win over Northwest last Friday night.
The good news: Senior Chris Maxwell was available for duty – and he turned out to be a important asset in an ugly contest.
The Knights jumped out to a quick 9 to 2 lead, but the Owls came back to lead 14 to 11 at the end of the first quarter. From there it was a dogfight. The Knights managed a 2-point lead at half time; then the Owls played hack-a-Knight the rest of the way and since the Knights are the best free-throw shooting team in the FAVC, this closed the deal. The Knights hit 19 of 23 free throws in the second half, led be Mark Byrd’s 7 of 8 in the fourth quarter and fought off the determined Owls 55 to 50.
The Knights as usual had 9 players in the scoring column, led by Justin Testerman’s 12 points and Conor Thomas’ 11. This is one of the most balanced Knights teams in years; in their 10 games this season the Knights have had 6 different players lead the team in scoring, and 6 different players lead in rebounding.
Next the Knights will travel to Walnut Hills for a tough conference matchup. Let’s help keep the Knights on the road to their second conference championship in 3 years! Box Scores

Kings’ Knights entered Friday night’s game with Little Miami still without Chris Maxwell and Ben Muennich – but also found out shortly before game time that the Panthers would be without their leading scorer, Matt Beerse. The net effect: the Knights once again demonstrated their depth, sprinting to a 17 to 4 first quarter lead and never looking back. Eleven players scored for Kings, led by Justin Testerman’s 12 and Matt Stevens’ 11. Mark Byrd had another outstanding game, contributing 8 rebounds.

KNIGHTS SURVIVE NORTHWEST 64 - 61
Wednesday, January 3rd
Kings' Knights traveled to Northwest Wednesday for a what they knew would be a test. The Knights were without their two top rebounders - Chris Maxwell and Ben Muennich, both out with ankle injuries - and would be facing a Northwest team that was getting some key players back and was ready to do some damage in the FAVC.
As expected the Knights - the best-shooting team in the division - came out blazing, opening up an 8-0 lead on 2 threes by Conor Thomas. But Northwest soon established its dominance under the boards and took a 4 point lead into the second quarter.
But the Knights stayed close, and their depth began to pay off again. In the 4th quarter the lead changed hands several times. Northwest hit two free throws with 31 seconds left to tie the game at 61. With both teams in double bonus the game would won or lost at the line, and the Knights, who lead the FAVC in free throw shooting, won it. Jeff Testerman hit one free throw, then Calvin Scruby hit two, and the Knights had pulled out a tough road win, 64 to 61.
Conor Thomas led all scorers with 15 points. But this was a coming out party for Mark Byrd, whose remarkable stat line flirted with a triple double: 13 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

KNIGHTS TAKE CONTROL OF FAVC CARDINAL
Dec. 22, 2006
The Kings Knights challenge Friday, 12-22-06, was to take on unbeaten Wilmington Hurricane - who lead the league in scoring and rebounding - and to do it without top rebounder Chris Maxwell, who sprained his ankle in practice Thursday night before the game and will be out 1 to 3 weeks.
With Maxwell out, the Knights knew they were in for a battle, and they got one. Fortunately for the Mill Maniacs, this is the most balanced Knights team in years. The Knights road that balance and a gutsy defensive effort for a tough 56 to 47 win.
The Hurricane jumped out to a 6 point lead at the end of the first quarter with freshman guard, Quinten Rollins, scoring 10 points. In the second quarter the Knights shut down Rollins and fought back to within a point at the end of the half, 22 to 21. Then in the third quarter this Knights team began to demonstrate its grit, building a lead point by point, till at the end of the quarter they led by 8, 39 to 31.
In the fourth quarter the Hurricanes put the Knights on the free throw line, and unlike the previous game at Turpin, the Knights could not rely on their touch at the line to preserve their lead, this time only sinking 3 of 10 free throws in the final quarter. Instead they relied on heady play and strong shooting from the floor. The Knights attempted 11 three-pointers in the game, but none in the final quarter, instead shooting 7 of 11 from inside the arc in the last 8 minutes. And when Ben Muennich coolly cut off the flow of missed foul shots by sinking two with 27 seconds left, the Knights had finally put it out of reach.
This time the Knights attack was led by Jeffrey Testerman with 12 points and 4 assists.
After Christmas break the Knights will travel to Northwest on Wednesday January 3 rd, then entertain Little Miami at The Mill on Friday the 5th. Box Scores

It was just one of those games... Kings Knights, having out-fought some tough early opponents, unleashed the hounds Tuesday night against an overmatched West Carrollton squad, coasting to an 86 to 34 win. The final score was not deceiving.
The Knights came out of blocks fast - grabbing a 22 to 5 lead at the end of the first quarter - and continued to stretch the lead throughout the game, eventually hitting 10 threes and 12 of 14 free throws. All 12 players scored. The three seniors - Conor Thomas, Justin Testerman and Chris Maxwell - led all scorers with 15, 13 and 11 points respectively.

KNIGHTS FIGHT OFF THE SPARTANSDec. 18, 2006
The Knights traveled to Turpin Friday to take on the Spartans in a key FAVC Cardinal match up. The Spartans came in undefeated and ranked no. 6 in the Enquirer DII-IV coaches' poll.
Both teams fired every bullet, but the Knights fought off a furious Spartan comeback to close out a 70 to 68 win. In the first quarter both teams came out firing, with the Knights stretching Turpin's zone defense and the Spartans using their athleticism to get buckets in the paint. The intensity level was high, the Spartans repeatedly fought off attempts by the Knights to gain some separation, and the first half ended in a 31-31 tie.
The third quarter and early fourth quarter featured the intensity and athleticism of Chris Maxwell, controlled penetration of the Spartan zone by Jeff Testerman, and in the Knights' latest torching of opposing teams' scouting reports, the deadly mid-range accuracy of Aaron Gayhart. The Knights held the Spartans to 10 points in the third quarter and then stretched a 7 point third quarter lead to 56-43 with 3:46 left in the game. Unfortunately it got interesting.
The Spartans went into a full-court press, made a couple of steals, banked in a three, and began playing hack-a-Knight to lengthen the game. The strategy worked. The lead was reduced to 10, to 7, then to 4, but the Knights refused to co-operate at the free throw line. With their lead dwindling and the home fans tasting blood, the Knights coolly stepped up and knocked down 10 of 12 free throws in the last two minutes with Aaron Gayhart, Conor Thomas, Jeff Testerman and Calvin Scruby all contributing, a layup by Maxwell and two final free throws by Testerman finally putting it out of reach. The strength of this Knights team is its balance, and once again they had 9 players put points on the board, led by Aaron Gayhart's 15.
It was a big road win, ensuring that the Knights would share the Cardinal Division lead with Wilmington going into the game with the Hurricane at The Mill on Friday. Let's start the Christmas vacation off right and Shake The Mill this Friday! GO KNIGHTS! Box Scores | SlideShow

Tuesday night Kings and Loveland staged one of their classic battles, with the Knights holding off a late charge to win, 50 to 49.
The game started with the Knights offsetting the baseline dominance of Loveland sophomore Bobby Capobianco with their typical balance - 5 Knights scored in the first period alone. The Knights scratched out a small lead and held on through the 2nd and 3rd quarters, finally gaining some breathing space when a 3 by Justin Testerman put the Knights up by 10 going into the 4th quarter.
But this was Kings-Loveland, so the Tigers fought back and actually knotted the score at 49 with 45 seconds left. The final stage of the game was a defensive struggle, with neither team able to score until Jeff Testerman dropped one of two free throws to give the
Knights the lead with 20 seconds left. Loveland had one more opportunity but a traveling call with 5 seconds left all but ended their chances, and the Knights pulled out a big non-conference victory, pushing their record to 2-1 heading into the conference schedule.
The Knight had 9 players put points on the board, led by Calvin Scruby’s 12 points. Justin Testerman posted 9 points and provided key leadership in the 4th quarter.

Late in the second quarter, Mason went on an 11-point run, and the Knights faced an uphill climb the rest of the way.
