Knights Trounce Barons, 56-39
Friday the Knights resumed their run to the conference title by taking out the Amelia Barons, 56 to 39, to take their record to 10-4, 6-1 Cardinal.
This was an Amelia team, remember, that had surprised Loveland and Wilmington, two teams that had beaten the Knights. But despite hanging close in the early stages, the Barons never looked like a match for the Knights.
The game started slowly, with neither team able to score in the first couple of minutes. Then Mark Byrd nailed a 3 and a free throw, and the dam burst with a furious exchange of buckets, resulting in a 13 to 11 Knights lead at the end of the quarter, with Calvin Scruby scoring 7 of the Knights points in the quarter.
The Barons fought to hang close, but at 19 to 15 with 4 minutes left in the half, Derrick Harris and Matt Stevens dropped 3-pointers on the Barons, and suddenly the lead was 10. It hovered in that territory till midway through the 3rd quarter, when Stevens again broke out with a 3 and a 2, pushing the lead to 18. It was pretty much over at that point. Coach Stevens steadily broadened his substitution pattern, and the Knights finished off a satifying win.
Matt Stevens led the Knights with 13 points, but the key individual statistic was Derrick Harris’ 13 rebounds - helping the Knights to a 36 to 22 advantage on the boards - which Derrick achieved while somehow managing to avoid jamming a finger on the rafters.
There were lots of contributions this night though - Aaron Gayhart had a strong game with 10 points and 9 rebounds, Mark Byrd contributed 9 points, Calvin Scruby and Danny Hagee 7 each, Derrick Harris 6 and Zac Murphy 4.
Next up for the Knights: Lebanon at The Mill! It’s another Bigger School challenge - the Knights are getting plenty of good D1 practice heading toward the tournament.
Let’s back the Knights on Tuesday! See you there!
GO KNIGHTS!!
